How to remove a stain on your quartz worktop?

We’ve all been there; one minute everything is fine, the next we spot a stain on the quartz worktop that wasn’t there before…

If you have a quartz worktop you’ll know how to keep on top of the everyday cleaning of it. If you’re new to owning a quartz worktop at some stage, you’ll probably have one of those moments where you spot a stain you could have sworn wasn’t there yesterday when you cleared up after supper.

STEP 1. IDENTIFY WHAT THE STAIN IS…

Sometimes we have no idea where it came from or what the stain is but it’s important to work out if it’s a burn mark or food. One is slightly easier to deal with than the other.

STEP 2. IF IT’S FOOD OR WINE…

Fill your cloth with warm soapy water, this will help break down any grease and wash the work surface. Our best advice is to have a microfiber cloth on hand for things like this, they tend to help get the stain out better with slightly less effort.

STEP 3. IF THE STAIN ISN’T COMING OUT

At this point, you’re probably panicking, if it hasn’t come out or has only faded slightly, it’s time to bring in a very gentle abrasive. Cif Cream or Bar Keepers Friend (linked) are some of the best at removing stains like tomato sauce from pasta, chorizo and red wine.

Using the same soapy microfiber cloth gently massage a small amount of cleaning cream into the area which is stained, this should get rid of it. About the size of a 5p.

We wouldn’t advise using this everywhere on your quartz worktop though as it can take the shine out of the polished surface. Reserve the cream for when you need to remove any blemishes.

STEP 4. FOR BURN MARKS…

All burns are different, some are deeper than others. The first thing to try is lightly scrubbing the surface with a mild abrasive. If the scorch marks are not deep, they should be removed through light scrubbing.

If the scorch marks still remain, smear white toothpaste or a paste of baking soda and water on the marks and let it sit there for a few minutes. Wipe off the toothpaste and lightly scrub the surface to remove the marks.

If the scorch marks are deep and will not come off, there isn’t much you can do. We can only suggest placing a feature chopping board in that area or a trivet.

We always encourage our customers to use a trivet, regardless of the material they choose to use in their kitchen. Heat can damage almost all worktop materials in some way, whether it’s wood or quartz.
