When choosing a kitchen worktop, one important factor to consider is heat resistance. Granite and quartz are two of the most popular materials for worktops, both known for their durability, but how do they stand up to heat? In this post, we’ll explore the heat resistance of granite and quartz worktops and what you need to know to protect your investment.
Granite: Natural Heat Resistance: Granite is a natural stone that forms under extreme heat and pressure, giving it a high level of heat resistance. You can place hot pots and pans directly on a granite worktop without worrying about damage, although it’s always a good idea to use trivets or heat pads to avoid thermal shock or any potential weakening of the sealant over time.
Quartz: Engineered Heat Resistance: Quartz worktops are also heat-resistant, though slightly less so than granite. Quartz is engineered from natural quartz crystals combined with resins, and while it can withstand moderate heat, prolonged exposure to high temperatures can cause the resin to discolor or become damaged. To maintain the beauty and integrity of your quartz worktop, it’s recommended to always use heat protection.
Practical Tips for Protecting Your Worktop: To get the most out of your granite or quartz worktop, here are some practical tips:
- Always use trivets or heat pads under hot cookware.
- Avoid placing hot appliances, like slow cookers or toaster ovens, directly on the worktop for extended periods.
- Be mindful of thermal shock, especially with quartz, by not placing extremely hot items on a cold surface or vice versa.
Conclusion: Both granite and quartz offer good heat resistance, making them excellent choices for kitchen worktops. However, taking a few simple precautions will help ensure your worktop remains in top condition for years to come. At Toucanstone, we provide high-quality granite and quartz worktops that are both beautiful and durable, perfect for any kitchen.
